The most significant way that we translate our philosophy into practice is by
donating 1% of our gross sales annually to charities, such as
The Nature Conservancy,
focused on good environmental stewardship and preservation. We also continually
strive to minimize our own environmental impact as we create high-quality products.
We choose environmentally safe products whenever we can do so without sacrificing
quality. For example, our business cards and paper bags (used at art festivals)
are printed on recycled paper, and we work to reuse packaging and supplies to reduce
our waste. We strive to buy from local suppliers or from nearby locales to minimize
our carbon footprint. Finally, we try to avoid unecessary packaging while maintaining
a protected shipping environment for the print(s).
One Percent for the Planet
is an excellent organization that shares many of the same values that we do. Becoming a member
requires submitting to an annual audit by their accountants to verify compliance with their goals.
While this is a reasonable way to ensure compliance, it is also expensive for the member - costing
several hundred dollars a year. Since we are still a small company, the cost of the audit would
decrease significantly the amount we would otherwise be able to donate to charity. Until we grow
large enough that we can easily absorb this additional cost, we prefer to provide the funds
directly to the charities as opposed to the accountants.
