Panthera leo
Up in a tree, its mother asleep at the base, this lion cub surveys its new domain. There is no question that the lions in the Serengeti know that they are at the top of the food chain: they are quite comfortable, almost casual, in their day-to-day activities. This does not mean that they are never in any danger; their prey will sometimes manage to kill a lion, in particular Cape buffalo and elephants, and the cubs sometimes fall victim to other predatory animals -- even other lions. This cub, quite at home on the trunk of the tree, where it is safe from hyenas, bothered less by bugs, and not engaged in a hunt, appears as if it has no doubt whatsoever about its place in the world. It is just waiting to grow into its throne.
