Released 2011-10-30 Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is full of spectacular hot springs and colorful pools. Most people see the springs in the summer, when the weather is fine and the air warm. Winter, however, brings out characteristics of the hot springs not seen in the summer. In winter, for example, the springs make their own snow. As hot steam rises from the scalding pools below, the frigid air quickly cools and condenses the water droplets. This results in the steam falling back to the earth as snow. On a bright, sunny, cloudless winter day, you can stand near a hot spring and collect falling snow on your hat.
