Harbor Seal, Phoca vitulina
Harbor seals spend about half of their lives on land, resting, escaping predators, giving birth, etc. Though extremely graceful in the water, the anatomy of their short flippers prevents them from walking on land, requiring instead an ungulating movement of the entire body to both ascend and descend their rocky haul-out spots. While harbor seals often gather in groups to rest, they prefer a bit of space between themselves and their neighbors, rarely touching each other while on land.
"Nature is art brought to life: often beautiful and inspiring, always fragile and in need of loving care" -- Jodi Gaylord
