Released 2009-06-01 Panthera leo Though certainly not afraid, this lioness was nonetheless watchful as she walked toward me. She, along with many other lions in Tanzania's more popular national parks, was accustomed to humans, but that did not make her complacent. If nothing else, we are smelly and loud to them -- humans in the parks are often accompanied by diesel-powered vehicles. And though she had less to fear from poaching as long as she was within the park's boundaries, she was still not completely safe from it. Fortunately for all of the animals, the Tanzanian authorities take the prevention of poaching very seriously, though they have not yet been able to completely eradicate it.
