Black Bear Cub, Ursus americanus

This black bear cub is a yearling, or a cub born during the previous year. Its mother is still close by, though this year she is a little more comfortable allowing her cub to wander farther away from her than she was last year. Next year the cub will be on its own, relying on all of the techniques its mother has taught it to survive. If it can avoid the big metal machines that run on wheels (trains and automobiles) as well as the funny looking two-legged creatures often sporting backpacks, it will be off to a good start.
