Released 2007-12-22 Coyote, Canis latrans Often confused with its larger relative, the wolf, coyotes live throughout large swaths of North America. Many live in packs, though where coyotes are common, it is not unusual to see solitary animals. They mostly prey on small mammals and birds; however, they are capable of bringing down much larger prey such as elk, especially when the pack hunts cooperatively. As famous a symbol of the American west as any other, the haunting cry of coyotes singing to each other reminds all who hear it that the night is not quite still and silent.
