Flathead River
The Flathead River forms the southwestern boundary of Glacier National Park in Montana. It swells with meltwater in the spring, and in summer is host to a bevy of whitewater rafting and fishing. All is not well within the river system, however, as the North Fork of the Flathead is considered by many environmental groups to be among the most endangered river systems in the United States. A proposed mountaintop-removal strip mine located a mere twenty-two miles north of the U.S.-Canada border would significantly impact the health and cleanliness of the river system. Protected in the U.S. as a Wild and Scenic River since 1976, the North Fork of the Flathead has no such protection in Canada, leaving it vulnerable to pollution and degradation -- which don't respect borders.
