Released 2009-10-03 Green Sea Turtle, Chelonia mydas The scales on the green sea turtle's flippers and head have distinctive light-colored edges. This helps to break up the outline of the turtle, acting as a type of camouflage. As the turtle swims around, munching on the algae and other marine plants growing on the submerged rocks and the sea floor, it would be easy with a casual glance to mistake it for another rock.
