Lion, Panthera leo
The most distinguishing characteristic of the male lion is his mane. There is considerable variety among manes: they range from blondish in color to nearly black, often within the same mane. Some are quite bushy, some fairly thin; some consist of quite long fur, while others are much shorter. Lions use their manes to appear larger than they really are in the face of a threat -- which often occurs in the form of another lion.
