Released 2010-11-01 Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus With no natural enemies, polar bears reign supreme in the Arctic. With her head slightly down, her ears erect, and her gait measured, this female polar bear is deciding what to do about the funny-looking, strange-smelling, two-legged creatures in front of her. This is a look not to be ignored: polar bears can charge at up to 34 mph (55 kph), and attacks on humans, though rare, are almost always predatory and fatal. Many animals in their range can nonetheless outrun the bears, as polar bears overheat quickly. If this bear makes you nervous, imagine staring down a male: they grow twice as large as the females.
