Released 2011-10-30 Black Bear, Ursus americanus I have often wondered whether animals can appreciate natural beauty in the same manner that humans can. It only takes a cursory glance at the behavior of certain animals, such as the elaborately decorated nests of some bird species, to make me think that they can. Others may argue that these types of behaviors are only indicative of a particular animal's ability to provide for its mate, and are valued in that manner only among members of a species. While I do not know which explanation is more correct, this bear certainly gave me pause. It took a seat on the rock outcropping and gazed for several minutes out at a truly beautiful sight -- Lake Superior -- seeming simply to enjoy the view.
