Herons are wading birds that use their long legs to keep their plumage out of the water while they hunt. They usually hunt alone, and their movements are slow and deliberate -- right up until it is time to make the catch. Then they extend their long necks toward their prey with explosive speed, catching -- not ususally spearing -- their meal in their mouths
