Released 2011-10-30 Cow Moose and Calf, Alces alces Moose are hardy creatures, well adapted to cold temperatures and deep snow. Their thick winter coats keep them so well insulated that they are not bothered by temperatures as low as -40 degrees F, but will find 23 degrees F uncomfortably hot. Thus, this cow and her calf's ability to rest comfortably in a thick snowstorm. Indeed, moose are so well adapted to the cold that their northern range is restricted not by temperature, but by the availability of food and cover. Their southern range is affected by temperature, however. Even if there is plenty of food and cover, moose cannot live in climates that get too warm.
